tutorial for piewinchesters » Hey. I was wondering, if it’s not too much trouble, you could tell me in /post/28025754463/graphic-exchange-for-cowls-d what the technique is called when you have like an outline of something and then the actual picture (like the red part) so I could look up a tutorial? Thanks!

For this tutorial i’m going to be using this photo of Mike Ross from the show Suits. This technique will be easier to achieve ifthere light in the background and dark in the foreground, in this case Mike should be darker than the background.

So this will not work as well with dark screenshots (sorry supernatural!)

now it should be brighter than the original:

Next you’re going to put a gradient over Mike.

image

There’s not need to blend it, just set it over the photo.

image

Take your second photo (in this case, I’ll be using Harvey Specter). Again, the same as the first photo it’s easier if the background is lighter and “clean”.

image

Blend to lighten, opacity 100% and your result should be:

The problem is that we can’t see Mike! So to remedy this do the following:

1. While SELECTING the layer with Harvey, on the bottom of your layer palette there should be a button “ADD LAYER MASK

2. Select a soft brush with the opacity of 30-40 %

3. Color black ON THE LAYER MASK, not on Harvey!! That way, when you make a mistake it won’t effect the photo directly.

image

The final step! Just put a gradient over Harvey. I used photoshop’s default black & white gradient. Then set a clipping mask over Harvey so the gradient won’t effect Mike.

anndddd the final product!

I hope you found this helpful. Message me if something is unclear!
